korean music feeds my soul

Another throwback post --
I posted my experience in my personal facebook so I'm basically just translating and reposting -- lol

Back in May when I visited Seoul, I was lucky enough to attend music program recording for the first time everrrrr.

I attended SBS The Show recording on 23rd, May 2017!

Although it was none of the biggest ones (Music Bank, M Countdown, Music Core nor Inkigayo) -- I was able to witness the real recording and I'm grateful for that!

〚﹏⋆ HOW TO ATTEND ⋆﹏〛

I noticed that the Korea Tourism Organisation do giveaway admission passes of music programs on their official Facebook page from time to time. They usually publish the giveaway post just few days before the actual recording date.

There isn't a fixed pattern about the time and program of their giveaway. They don't do the giveaway weekly or monthly, and sometimes it could be KBS Music Bank, sometimes SBS The Show. So I could only constantly check their Facebook, even when I was in Seoul.

THIS is the exact post that I saw and applied for.

Without knowing who are going to perform, Jeslyn and I gave it a try to apply because we were so eager to gain such experience.

On 19th, both of us received a confirmation e-mail. It came with a map (how to go to SBS Prism Tower), some information (recording time, MCs /although it wasn't updated lol/) about the music program, as well as instructions (bring passport, be punctual, no photo-taking allowed <- just some basic rules).

ONE STEP CLOSER TO ANOTHER GOAL! WE GOT IT!

(I only found out Roy Kim was one of the attendees after discovery of this preview clip -- oh my hearteu ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°))

:::::♥  D-DAY 23rd May 2017 ♥:::::

We followed the map and went to SBS Prism Tower a little earlier than the given time. The weather was cool... raining but I did not bring my umbrella.

We sat at benches outside the building and waited for staff to approach us, as the instructions say KTO representative will check with those eligible for admission. /was kinda nervous we could be missed out cuz we don't look foreign enough.../

While waiting, we saw a member of an idol group (his hair was dyed purple so we supposed he was an idol) having a mini fanmeeting outside the building cuz he was surrounded by fans holding cameras. I only found out later that he was Sign from MAP6.

Then a guy (should be a KTO representative) held a banner board with KTO logo came out, and people started to queue, so we followed and queued up. Instructions weren't made clear so we actually only queued for nothing... and then rain got heavier, we all had to move into the lobby of SBS Prism Tower.

fans who are eligible for admission chosen from fancafes / fanclubs of the performing groups - (they were led to the studio before us and they stood at the zone in front of the stage; i counted, there were 10 ROYROSES!)

We waited as the KTO representative recorded names and passport numbers of each of the fans in the queue who are eligible to watch the recording. There isn't a real physical pass though.

- wait and wait and wait -

After the fans chosen from fancafes entered group by group, it's finally our turn to get into the studio.

The front zone was especially reserved for them. We sat at the audience seat, which is further away from the stage.

☆゚.*・。゚.*・。゚☆゚ THE SHOW ☆゚.*・。゚.*・。゚☆゚

I personally don't watch Music Programs at a regular basis. But I do see that SBS The Show is less popular and probably due to this reason, there were relatively more rookie groups than mainstream idol groups.

Before I attended this recording session, the actual recording situation had always been a mystery to me. The only knowledge I had about music program recording was only the strict prohibition of photo-taking and recording. I knew about pre-recording but had no idea how it worked.

And the mystery was solved on that day.

I sat in the first row and was able to see clearly both the stage and the monitoring screen from my position.

Based on my observation, the performances you see on broadcast could be one of the below:
Disclaimer: this is my personal observation made merely based on 170523 SBS The Show recording.

1.  recorded and aired simultaneously - real live - (but I wasn't sure... which group I saw that day exactly was live... probably Roy Kim and Urban Zakapa? I'm not sure though...)

2.  pre-recorded BUT groups still performed the whole song -
i realised it's a pre-recorded performance because the performers had obviously different gestures with the one on screen ;
other than that, a member of Momoland who co-host the show with Block B's P.O. and EXID's Junghwa was wearing different costume with the members when performing on stage, but nothing is wrong with what was seen on screen - which means, it was actually pre-recorded

3. pre-recorded BUT groups left halfway -
and staff came on to set up the stage (e.g.: instruments for band) for the next group of performers

4. pre-recorded - groups didn't perform
this happened for Twice - all the people inside the studio watched the pre-recorded performance played on big screen

once again, this personal observation is done merely based on my experience watching 170523 SBS The Show recording

I was aware with the existence of pre-recording but didn't know there would be this much of pre-recorded parts. It was different from what I expected.

We may be in one same studio with the idols but there's still a distance which makes it hard to see their faces clearly, of course it's better to watch clips - perfect angle, high definition and much better sound quality. But to compare watching a broadcast with live recording is just like watching DVD vs. attending an actual concert. The atmosphere is definitely better in real. (but concert is wayyyyyyy better. lol)

Also, I was looking forward to interaction between idol groups and the fans who attended but there was barely any. The MCs host, the groups left the stage right after the performance (or halfway) - they were just doing their own job.

However, the winner of this episode of SBS The Show, VIXX did give speech and waved to Starlight who were there. A lot of Starlight attended with their lightstick - in both audience seat and front zone and I liked the view ^.<

*something Roy Kim ◕‿◕

Personally I'd prefer watching attending a concert of my favourite singer, because... let say Roy Kim, I love his live singing. He has a lot of adlibs during live performance which makes live versions sound more like live versions as compared to music programs performance that sounds almost exactly the same with the CD.

I was so excited when Roy Kim went on stage and unknowingly hit Jeslyn out of excitement (sorry;;) I mentioned earlier there was about 10 Royroses who were in the front zone, but the fanchant was so loud! I tried to follow - wasn't loud enough and couldn't catch up - orz

And I was also very amazed by THE EAST LIGHT. I did not know about the group when I was there but they left me impressed. They were so energetic on stage and I thought their instruments were unique as I have never seen those... It's just recently that I found out how talented they are, at such young age! Hope they do well!

The actual recording is different from my expectation,  yet I'm still happy to be part of the recording! Been watching clips all this while and that was a great experience and opened my eyes to something new. I'd still love to go to music programs / variety programs recording to observe if I could get the opportunity.

I'm forever bad in closing an entry so...
Thank you for reading. 😂

  1. Btw when i told my friend we missed the music bank recording because we had already book the accommodation, she asked:why didn't you guys just cancel the booking? and only i realized that we actually can cancel it (cancel the first day) because we still have some time (no penalty i think)
